WORLD CHAMPIONS OF THE OPEN CLASS: MICHAEL SOMMER AND HIS EB29" 2014

At the WGC 2014, held in Lezno (Poland), Michael Sommer flying his EB29 won his fourth title as world champion. Uli Schwenk finished fourth, also flying the EB29. Our Congratulations go to all participating Pilots!

Here comes Michael Sommers report: I had a pretty weak start. Especially on the second day, a day with many showers, flying  separately from the field I  circumnavigated a shower, on the wrong side as it turned out afterwards, and so lost 15 minutes. Day 6 brought  a racing task again with many showers and even thunderstorms that mixed up the whole competition. On the following days I  slowly regained my previous competition form and was able to close the gap to the leading pilots a little day by day. Finishing first  on the last day I was finally able to catch the leading british pilot Andrew Davis.
The concept of the EB29 with variable wing span again proved superior. On the fast days I flew with the short 25.3 m wing and so could easily compete with the “small”  open class gliders JS1 and Quintus. On the weaker days I benefitted from the superiority of the 28.3 m wing. Although in  general the “small” gliders profited from the unusually short tasks of this WGC, on most days concentrated only on the best  2 to 2,5 hours of the day, resulting in considerable high average speeds. On the days 1 to 4 I flew with the short 25.3 m wing. From day 5 on  I used the 28.3m wing.
